Well, not actual pet monsters that you can adopt. Sorry to disappoint you, there. But the Pet Monsters anthology from Raconteur Press should be the next best thing, right?
The collection features 10 tales of “Can we keep it, Mom?” One of those is my own story, “No Feels Left to Give.” When Max finally gets permission to spend the night with his friend Joey, he’s shocked when the boy shares that he believes there’s a monster living under his bed. He’s even more flabbergasted when the monster appears. The four-armed, three-eyed creature that Joey calls Butch comes from a different world, one that’s been stripped of emotions by an entity known as The Silence, and he has been sent to our world to help restore the “Feels.” He’s been taking his time, but his bosses have become impatient. If they don’t see results immediately, they’ll send something much worse than Butch through the harvest them. Max and Joey now have to help the monster figure out how to accomplish his mission in a single night.
I’m not sure what’s come over me lately. Yes, this is exactly what it sounds like, another heart-warming children’s story with a bit of a tear-jerker ending. But it’s also a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.
