About me

Fred Phillips has been writing stories since elementary school. Back then, he pecked them out with two fingers on a turquoise Remington manual typewriter he found in his grandparents’ closet. In those days, they were about thinly veiled versions of his friends and himself saving the day in scenarios that were often quite similar to the popular shows and cartoons of the day. In the summer between third and fourth grade, he discovered Edgar Allan Poe, quite by accident. From the first time he read the opening line of The Tell Tale Heart, his literary path was set. A few years later, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, and Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman’s Dragonlance books would cement it.

Aside from a short-lived desire to be a Navy pilot at the release of “Top Gun” and a few years in college when he thought he could be a rock star, his ultimate dream has always been to be an author. Luckily, he’s better at telling stories than playing guitar. That dream led him to pursue a journalism degree at Louisiana Tech University.

Fred spent 20 years telling true stories as an award-winning writer and editor in the newspaper business before he was finally able to escape that particular dungeon. During that time, he also shared his love of heavy metal and speculative fiction through features and reviews that appeared in various publications, websites, and a national news wire service. He now works in communications for a Fortune 500 company.

Born and raised in Louisiana, Fred still lives there with his wife, son, and a couple of cats who showed up and adopted them. When he’s not exploring the worlds of fantasy and horror in his head, he can usually be found exploring the swamps, forests, and bayous of his home state with his son.
